If Apple CarPlay dominates the car, what becomes of the AM/FM buttons?

If software such as Apple CarPlay, which makes its debut in more cars including Chevrolet this summer, dominates the dashboard, what will become of the AM/FM radio and other controls?  Apple is suggesting to auto companies that they let Apple handle the integration so users need not switch between platforms while driving.  As you can imagine, the auto companies are reticent to give up control.  So will automakers start writing software in concert with Apple?  This is a pretty  complex issue as it reaches beyond the radio and into other auto functionality. The New York Times details.
